GRADING OUT: Report card, game balls after Auburn's win over Ole Miss

Sophomore quarterback Shea Patterson finished 34-51, 346 yards and two touchdowns, both to DK Metcalf in the second half.

The Auburn corner covering Metcalf on that play was true freshman Traivon Leonard. "Touchdowns win games and field goals help, but touchdowns do it".

Saturday's win also keeps Auburn undefeated in conference play at 3-0. It was the only team in the FBS to do the latter.

But a road loss to Cal and two consecutive blowouts to SEC opponents Alabama and Auburn (who beat the Rebels a combined 110-26) seems to have been the last straw for Ole Miss.

"That was a little swagger that we had about ourselves, that we were the only team in the nation holding guys under 14 points".

Auburn linebacker Deshaun Davis reflects on the defense's performance saying, "You could see on the sideline we were kind of disappointed".

The victory over Ole Miss was the third game this season in which Pettway has been held out of action. Previous year at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium in Oxford, Miss., then-quarterback Chad Kelly completed 36 of 59 passes for 465 yards in a 570-yard, 29-point effort.

Why? Because they signal that this team, now atop the NFC South with a 4-1 record, still has room to improve in significant ways. A couple of defensive players said the problem was poor tackling, including some rare misses by middle linebacker Luke Kuechly.

With three road games in a row - at LSU, Arkansas and Texas A&M (with a bye week before the A&M game) - the path is certainly more hard moving forward.

Auburn won't care about any of that, though, and Johnson and the running game should be able to have a huge game against a defensive unit that has allowed almost 150 rushing yards a week. "So, we're going to try to get him healthy". A lot of them are extra points.

Auburn didn't lie down.

After losing the Rebels' Week 6 game against SEC rivals Auburn by a score of 44-23, apparently things got desperate in Oxford, Mississippi.

With coach Hugh Freeze forced out before the season, Ole Miss is now 2-3, including 0-2 in the SEC, under interim coach Matt Luke.

Patterson led two more touchdown drives in the fourth. At the same time, it never was in doubt and 13 of Ole Miss' points came in the final period. In five games, Auburn's defense has not allowed more than 14 points in any game. "For him to say that, that just means I'm doing my job right". First, the Rebels did not turn the ball over. I would compare it to any group in the country. Which got me thinking, writing about football is fun, so actually coaching a team in real life would be the next logical step, right?
