Opposition demands electoral reforms in Kenya

Kenya's main opposition leader announced Tuesday that he would not contest the rerun of the presidential election, set for October 26, casting doubts on the legitimacy of the vote process.

Incumbent president Uhuru Kenyatta responded by telling local press there was nowhere in law that required the electoral body to consult Mr Odinga.

In a party statement, Odinga's National Super Alliance said that Jubilee had "no intention of competing on a level playing field" and slammed the IEBC.

Opposition leader Raila Odinga and his supporters have turned their ire on the election board for its role in the canceled poll.

He has singled out the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) for particular criticism, deeming it "rotten". The electoral board has balked at most of those changes and Odinga insisted he would not take part in an election that would repeat the mistakes of the previous one.

He highlighted six reasons why NASA withdrew from the race. Kenya's President Uhuru Kenyatta has appealed to the opposition to hold legal demonstrations, not street protests, and allow Kenyans to get back to normal life after last week's disputed vote. "Now we are ready for the repeat election and we are sure we will win with a bigger margin", Kenyatta continued. People are asking why is it that you go to court, the court rules in your favour and you come and withdraw from the election, and this election has been set because of the petition that you have filed.

Meanwhile, a Customs Bill will legislate for a new "stand alone" customs regime after Brexit , regardless of any deal with the EU. Jensen said: "In any political negotiations, there is not enough time , not enough money, not enough this, not enough that".

"It is my democratic right not to participate in a pre-rigged election", Odinga told journalists.

Odinga is reportedly leaving the country for scheduled visit to the United Kingdom, with only two weeks to the October 26 polls.

Over the weekend, NASA leaders maintained that they will not participate in the coming elections if their demands are not met.

Opposition lawmakers on Tuesday boycotted a session of the National Assembly dedicated to amending election laws, saying they refuse to give legitimacy to a flawed process.

"But Odinga says that the IEBC has refused to even listen to the some of the demands - demands that the NASA coalition says are reasonable - that they have been making".

The opposition had said the elections had been fraught with irregularities despite electoral observers calling it free and fair.
