House Intel leaders to release Facebook ads purchased by Kremlin-linked groups

On Monday, Microsoft told Reuters that the company is looking to see if Russians purchased ads on Microsoft owned products and platforms in order to influence the results of 2016 usa election.

"We take reports of misuse of our platform seriously". Microsoft is reportedly reviewing sales records as part of the process and is looking to take steps to prevent "inappropriate activity" from happening in the future. Google has uncovered less than $100,000 in ad spending potentially linked to Russian actors, the source said.

Motherboard points out that Facebook also purchased full-page ads in the New York Times and Washington Post to win back its users.

As more facts continue to unfold regarding how external forces influenced last year's USA elections, Google has reportedly uncovered how Russia-linked accounts bought election ads on its network.

Google has discovered Russian operatives spent tens of thousands of dollars on ads on its YouTube, Gmail and Google Search products in an effort to meddle in the 2016 United States presidential election.

Google, owned by Alphabet Inc, runs the world's largest online advertising business and YouTube is the world's largest online video site. "The extent of the Russian presence just continues to grow and grow, and I don't think we yet have any kind of full understanding of just how expansive this presence may have been".

Any discussion about whether Americans were involved with the Russian-linked Facebook effort was beyond the scope of Wednesday's meeting, Schiff said. The goal was to influence voting behaviour, in some cases by suppressing turnout.

Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook's chief operating officer, told lawmakers behind closed doors that the company is working hard to ensure Americans "understand what the propaganda is that they may or may not be reading", said House Republican Rep. Mike Conaway, who is leading the House intelligence committee probe.

Google allows political targeting for two categories - left-leaning and right-leaning - a far more limited set of options than the thousands of ways to slice and dice categories on Facebook.

In addition to Facebook, Alphabet's Google and Twitter have recently detected that suspected Russian operatives used their platforms previous year to purchase ads and post content that was politically divisive. "We are taking a deeper look to investigate attempts to abuse our systems, working with researchers and other companies, and will provide assistance to ongoing inquiries", a Google spokeswoman said on Monday. Information surfacing in the last month revealed that the Russian hacking operation Internet Research Agency had bought the ads.
