Kenya poll commissioner quits, says election can not be

Akombe said that she had questioned her role at the commission for many months, but had "soldiered on".

Protesters in western Kenya have thrown chairs and destroyed tents where a training camp was being set up for officials to prepare for this month's presidential election.

A top Kenyan election commissioner has quit and fled the country a week before a re-run of the presidential vote, citing political intimidation and saying the election would be a "mockery" of democracy.

Kenyan Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) commissioner Roselyn Akombe addresses a news conference in Nairobi, Kenya, May 29, 2017.

"My decision to leave the IEBC will disappoint some of you, but it is not for lack of trying", she said in a statement issued today (Oct. 18).

With only six days to the repeat election, the Jubilee Party has moved to the Supreme Court seeking orders to cite NASA Presidential candidate Raila Odinga for contempt of court over his declaration that there will be no election on October 26, 2017.

The re-run was ordered by the Supreme Court on September 1 after it nullified the august.

She says the electoral commissioners need to be fearless and speak up because the new presidential elections scheduled on October 26 can not meet the basic expectations of credibility.

A repeat poll was announced after the Supreme Court nullified the result of the August 8 election after opposition leader Raila Odinga lodged a complaint, claiming that the computers of the electoral commission had been hacked to generate a victory for Kenyatta.
