Ramapo community gathers for Hindu festival of lights

The Indian holiday Diwali, the festival of lights, was celebrated at Cape Breton University on Wednesday in an event attended by more than 100 people. "Everyone's in a jolly mood eating candies and food".

It lasts five days in total, with the festival of lights falling on the third day of celebrations, which arrives on the 15th day of the Hindu month of Kartik. The celebrations are a way of offering thanks for the year gone by and all the good fortune that it brought.

Hundreds of students and members of the community gathered in the Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology courtyard today for its 10th annual Diwali festival. This year, the official date of Diwali is October 19.

"It is a time for reflection and renewal, and a time for peace".

"There are students who travel so far away from home and we want to help them celebrate Diwali and remember where they come from". It is also celebrated by millions of Buddhists, Sikhs, and Jains in America, India and around the world.

ICA President Janica Daryanani says "it is one of the occasions I look the most forward to at The University of Tampa because we get to share the importance of this occasion to all the students in the community".

Our Indian-American neighbors and friends have made incredible contributions to our country - and to the world. In Bangladesh, there have been reports of a multiple attacks on Hindu temples during Diwali as well as some Hindus in Pakistan have stated they will not celebrate Diwali due to security threats from local Islamist groups. America is especially thankful for its many Indian-American citizens who serve BRAVELY in our armed forces and as first responders in communities throughout our great land.

Police have tightened security ahead of Diwali while the city government has released salaries for the Hindu staff and ordered cleaning up the temples across the megalopolis. The fireworks signify Lord Ram's return to his kingdom after being exiled for 14 years and defeating King Ravana, when the local people set off their own version of fireworks.

The Lighting of the Diya is typically celebrated by families in their homes.
