FRANKFORT, Ky. Sen. Rand Paul's absence from the Senate while recovering from an assault in Kentucky creates another challenge for a slim Republican majority that's caused heartburn for its lack of unity at times, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Monday. Rand Paul has five rib fractures, including three displaced fractures and bruised lungs, after an assault in his home in Bowling Green, Kentucky, a senior adviser told CNN. Although the alleged perpetrator, Rene Boucher, 59, is reportedly a registered Democrat, investigators can not determine if the crime was politically motivated.

Asked if he might have to delay some votes, McConnell said: "I haven't had a chance to check with him (Paul) yet today about it".

A spokesman for Paul said the injury would cause him to miss work. "It was a very regrettable dispute between two neighbors over a matter that most people would regard as trivial".

The officer identified as 30-year-old Jaimie Cox made a traffic stop where he made a brief call indicating he was in distress. He was transported to OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center in Rockford, where he died as a result of his injuries.

Boucher was released from the Warren County Detention Center on Saturday after posting a $7,500 bond, according to Kentucky State Police and the Associated Press.

Boucher allegedly tackled Paul from behind and forced him to the ground, according to the arrest warrant.

"Paul didn't get any severe injuries to his face", Robert stated that Paul did not get any face injuries and he did not discuss his assault to media.

David Habich, a spokesman for the Federal Bureau of Investigation, said the agency was aware of the incident concerning Paul. An automated phone system at the jail did not provide access to lawyer information for Boucher.

Paul was wearing headphones while mowing his lawn in Bowling Green, Kentucky, when he was attacked from behind by Rene Boucher, 59, on Sunday afternoon, two sources said.

"We are working with our state and local partners to determine if there was a violation of federal law", Habich said. Online records state that Boucher's party affiliation is Democrat.
