Google Is Adding Wait Times For Restaurants Because It Follows You Everywhere

To calculate wait times, Google analyzes patterns of customer visits over the last several weeks. We already liked being able to check for the most popular times of day for restaurants and retailers; it's also rather helpful to know how long you might expect to spend at a place, too. This isn't for restaurants requiring reservations, but the walk-in restaurants.

Of course, wait times aren't just an issue at fine dining establishments. Never fear, hungry reader, as Google has rustled up a new feature for Search that shows estimated wait times for food at almost a million sit-down restaurants. You might love Gmail, but you have to suffer through targeted ads; you may enjoy using Google Maps, but you have to give up your location privacy. It will then come to Google Maps to Android, at which point it will expand to include grocery stores, the company says.

No name has been released and no motive identified, although authorities are minutes away from holding a press conference. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms said agents from its San Antonio office were responding to the shooting.

You can also click an hour other than the current one to see Google's guess for that time of day, if you're trying to plan ahead. Users will also be able to tap on any of the bars in the chart to get information on the estimated wait time. Google predicts it will be able to offer these wait times for nearly a million restaurants worldwide when the update is completed.

Adding wait times is a minor feature upgrade that will at least make my life a little more convenient. This will be rolling out as part of the popular times feature, which has been available in Maps and Search for quite some time.
