Parliament emergency sparks evacuation as police probe 'three white powder packages'

A spokesman said: "The MSP block was evacuated as a precaution, but inquiries have concluded there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding this incident and no crime has been committed".

THE MSP block at the Scottish Parliament has been evacuated after two suspect packages were found.

"Thankfully it appears to have been a false alarm in this case and the substance was found not to be risky".

The Scottish fire and rescue service was attending the scene.

"I would like to thank the Scottish Parliament's staff and the emergency services for their prompt and effective response".

Police and firefighters have been sent to the scene of the evacuation.

"A lot of MSPs were in committee meetings so it was mostly staff in the building".

A BBC reporter said on Twitter that a package containing white powder had been sent to a lawmaker.

The offices of Liz Smith, Jamie Halcro-Johnston, Edward Mountain are now closed off while business continues as usual in the other parts of the building. The Parliament's incident management team has been activated.

These were believed to have been sent to Tory MSPs Liz Smith and Edward Mountain.

"This is part of a pre-arranged process put in place, ready to deal with such developing situations".

Edinburgh Police has confirmed it is responding to an ongoing incident.

Scottish Parliament has been evacuated after three suspicious packages were discovered.
