Minneapolis Councilmember-elect Jenkins reflects on win, future goals

Jenkins, 56, said she believes her and Roem's victories are proof numerous nation's communities won't succumb to hatred, bigotry or transphobia - and are willing to fight for social justice and equality for all minority groups. She defeated transphobic Republican incumbent Bob Marshall for a spot in the House of Delegates.

"This is about the people of the 13th District disregarding fear tactics, disregarding phobias. where we celebrate you because of who you are, not despite it", Roem said. It's not a large number, but it's a meaningful one. During her acceptance speech, she thanked her supporters and the trans community, saying: "To every person who has ever been singled out, who has ever been stigmatized, who has ever been the misfit, who's ever been the kid in the corner, who's ever needed someone to stand up for them when they didn't have a voice of their own because there is no one else with them, this one is for you". She said she hopes to further that sort of development across more Minneapolis neighborhoods once she takes her seat on the City Council in January.

Andrea Jenkins, elected to the Minneapolis City Council, is the first openly trans woman ever elected to the city council of a major US city, and will be the only openly trans person of color now serving in elected office anywhere in the nation. Though she was the highest ranking openly transgender elected official in the United States at the time, she said that her gender status never came up publicly during the race. However, Jenkins's election to the City Council after so many years of serving Minneapolis was a natural transition. His victory wasn't announced until Wednesday afternoon, due to the instant-runoff voting system Minneapolis uses. Also on the ballot for city council with Jenkins was trans man Phillipe Cunningham.

It adds to a banner night for transgender people in public office.

So here's a quick round-up of three transgender female candidates who won and what makes them so great.

Marshall said in an interview with NPR that Roem "engage [d] in this behavior - which clearly goes against the laws of nature and nature's God", and last month his campaign sent out flyers referring to Roem as "him".
