Graduation Success Rate for Student-Athletes Sets All-Time Mark

For the fifth-straight year, Georgia Tech athletics has posted its highest NCAA Graduation Success Rate ever, with its GSR coming in at 88 percent in the latest data that was released by the NCAA on Wednesday. The GSR subtracts student-athletes who depart for allowable exclusions (e.g. official church mission), as well as those who transfer but would have been academically eligible to compete had they returned to the institution. Statistics represent students that began their studies during the 2010-11 academic year.

The 2016-17 academic year had the highest Graduation Success Rate, or GSR, for Texas Tech Athletics in school history.

"We're proud of the success our student athletes have made in the classroom", Tech Athletic Director Kirby Hocutt said in the release. In the fall of 2013, as UConn was on its way to winning its most recent championship, the program's graduation rate hit a low of 8 percent.

Eleven Terps teams had a GSR above 80 percent, with field hockey, women's golf, gymnastics and volleyball along with women's basketball posting flawless scores.

Further, the report noted that one of the teams is working on a pair of glasses that are equipped with a 3D camera, but no screen. This morning, Bloomberg reported that Apple is indeed working on an AR (augmented reality) device , aiming to ship in 2020.

Rutgers' GSR figure ranks tied for sixth among Big Ten football programs and tied for 35th nationally among Football Bowl Subdivision teams.

The Razorbacks' two most profitable sports, football and men's basketball, recorded their highest scores in the GSR. This year's change was marked by a 3 percent increase from last year for African-American athletes, to 77 percent from 74 percent. Second, the GSR does not penalize colleges whose student-athletes transfer in good academic standing. First, the GSR holds colleges accountable for those student-athletes who transfer into their school.

This calculation makes it a more complete and accurate look at student-athlete success. Among BIG EAST schools, only Villanova and Creighton achieved a ideal 100 percent score in men's basketball. The football, baseball and men's basketball programs were all above the national average with baseball, men's swimming and diving, women's track, women's soccer, women's swimming and diving, women's basketball and gymnastics all scoring 90 or above. The women's basketball, women's tennis and volleyball programs have achieved a flawless GSR each of the 13 years the rate has been computed by the NCAA.
