Markets stay flat even as Sensex, Nifty face more losses

On the other hand, the S&P BSE automobile index declined by 158.79 points, oil and gas index by 113.58 points and healthcare index by 128.88 points. The 30-share index, after opening strong at 33,417.35, advanced to hit the day's high of 33,484.70 on the back of robust foreign fund inflows. This is its weakest closing level since October 31, when it had ended at 33,213.13.

Both the indices extended losses as Sensex had tanked nearly 100 points within 15 minutes of trading, dragging the benchmark index below the psychological mark of 33,200.

Refiners declined as oil prices remained well supported on OPEC-led supply cuts.

Major Sensex gainers on Friday were: SBI, up 6.20 per cent at Rs 333.20; LT, up 3.90 per cent at Rs 1,264.05; HUL, up 2.99 per cent at Rs 1,290.75; M&M, up 2.34 per cent at Rs 1,393.40; and ICICI Bank, up 2.25 per cent at Rs 318.60.

Shares in the other Asian markets hovered near a decade high on Thursday.

Sector-wise, the BSE metal index suffered the most by falling 1.55 per cent, followed by energy (1.50 per cent), telecom (1.49 per cent), oil & gas (1.30 per cent), PSU (1.21 per cent), realty (0.99 per cent), consumer durables (0.88 per cent), power (0.72 per cent), auto (0.67 per cent), bankex (0.52 per cent) and infrastructure (0.38 per cent).

Global research firm Citi has initiated coverage with buy rating on SBI Life Insurance Company and set a price target at Rs 800 per share, implying a potential upside of 22 percent from Thursday's close.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average ended up 0.04 per cent at 23,557.23 after spending most of the day in negative territory.

Similarly, the NSE Nifty50 dipped by 19.20 points or 0.19 per cent to 10,283.95 points.

In terms of the broader markets, the BSE mid-cap closed lower by 0.77 per cent and the small-cap index lost 0.96 per cent.
