Should Oklahoma's Baker Mayfield Win the Heisman Trophy — TIMEOUT

Mayfield spent much of his postgame address Saturday apologizing for his actions.

Riley made the announcements Monday.

Riley explained the decision to punish Mayfield.

Mayfield will play, however, so this is more of a symbolic form of discipline than anything substantial.

KU's Joe Dineen, Dorance Armstrong and Daniel Wise refused to shake quarterback Baker Mayfield's hand before the game while holding their arms behind their backs. After getting slighted, Mayfield jawed with the Jayhawks and some fans seated behind the Oklahoma bench. Mayfield, giving Kansas' sideline the business after a touchdown pass put the Sooners up 28-3 on the hapless Jayhawks.

Earlier this season in another display of poor sportsmanship, he planted the Sooner flag in the middle of Ohio State's stadium after an upset win.

"Bake's a fierce competitor", Oklahoma left tackle Orlando Brown said.

"I feel like this decision was hard for a lot of reasons", Riley said. It's not the example I want to set.

Kyler Murray will start in Mayfield's place.

Kansas coach David Beaty has apologized for himself and his captains and said Monday that he had spoken with Riley. "I want to also apologize to really our stakeholders, our Jayhawk fans, Jayhawks now and all of the ones before us, because it means more to be a Jayhawk".

Beaty said he holds no ill will toward Mayfield. "What a terrific player he is".

Beaty, who said he has since spoken to his team about the incident, said he was not aware before the game that his players were going to refuse handshakes.

I don't have a Heisman vote, but if I did I would not waste it on Baker Mayfield. I wish nothing but the best for him.

"But you know, there's things you've got to think about beyond just the moment, and that's what we're using as the teachable moment".
