Why NC State football coach Dave Doeren chose the Wolfpack over Tennessee

"We want to support the continued growth of the program under Dave, the culture he has established, the competitive and academic gains he's helped us achieve, and his continued progress in recruiting", Yow said. Doeren, in his fifth season at NC State, was also in the running for the Ole Miss head job, but the Rebels promoted interim coach Matt Luke to be full-time head coach.

ESPN's Adam Rittenberg reported that Doeren's new contract at N.C. State will be finalized "very soon", and potentially before Thursday is over. Public backlash caused Schiano's deal to fall through, while the other three have all rejected Tennessee's offer.

According to Wolken, Doeren and Debbie Yow, the school's athletic director, are in a "contentious" standoff over contract negotiations.

Tennessee's search, looking more every day like N.C. State's wild, protracted search for a basketball coach in 2006, had already been through four candidates, including Duke's David Cutcliffe, before it reached Doeren.

Doeren, who will turn 46 Sunday, has a 33-30 record in five seasons in Raleigh. Reports over the past few days have linked Oklahoma State's Mike Gundy and Purdue's Jeff Brohm to Tennessee's vacancy, but like Doeren, they have stayed put.

Doeren had faced an uncertain future late last season before beating rival North Carolina in the regular-season finale, after which Yow said he would return for 2017.

Tennessee has reportedly once again shifted its search for a head coach, this time to former Texas A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin. It's hard to see what the appeal is, though the Wolfpack were 6-1 at one point this season and ranked in the top 15. However, another source told Wolken that Yow made an offer to Doeren that would increase his annual pay - and give his assistants multiyear contracts.

Tennessee was paying Butch Jones $4 million per year when it fired him earlier this month with a 34-27 overall record.
