North Tamil Nadu coast braces for fresh system in Bay of Bengal

Two Coast Guard Advanced Offshore Patrol Vessels, Two Interceptor Boats and Aircraft pressed have been deployed for Search & Rescue operations by Indian CoastGuard. Vijayan announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh each to the next of kin of victims who died in rainrelated incidents in the state.

Meanwhile, at least 1,044 persons in Kanniyakumari have been lodged in 16 relief camps while the number was 205 in two camps in Tirunelveli. He said a total of 529 families were sheltered across 30 relief camps.

In Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli and Tuticorin districts, heavy rains and gusty winds uprooted 579 trees, it said, adding, efforts are on to remove them.

As cyclone Ockhi continues to ravage Tamil Nadu and Kerala on the second day, eight people have lost their lives and more than 100 fishermen and 50 boats have gone missing.

According to the Indian Meteorological Department, "The very severe cyclonic storm Ockhi over Lakshadweep and adjoining southeast Arabian Sea moved further west-northwestwards with a speed of 11 kmph during the past 6 hours", quotes India Today.
