Netflix Confirms House of Cards Final Season Will Not Include Kevin Spacey

But the show was put on hold after actor Anthony Rapp claimed Spacey sexually assaulted him when he was 14. The season had already begun filming with Spacey in the lead.

The eight-episode season will focus on co-star Robin Wright.

Wright plays Claire Underwood, who started out as a less central figure on the show than her husband. The streaming platform first said it would end after the sixth season, a 13-episode arc set for release in 2018.

Claire Underwood has moved center stage since "House of Cards" premiered in 2013, going from the wife of Spacey's congressman to first lady and then vice president. That hiatus has now been extended until the new year. It hopes some of its movies, such as "Bright", starring Will Smith, may be shown in movie theaters so that people who want to "go out on Friday night" can enjoy them.

Following Rapp's allegation, Spacey said in a post on Twitter he does not remember the alleged incident.

It was announced in an official statement by Netflix that the company would no longer be affiliated with the once, critically-acclaimed actor following the on-going accusations against him. Many fans suggested moving forward with Robin Wright and that seems to be exactly the direction Netflix has made a decision to take.

Sarandos added that the season will provide closure for fans. But in fact, he said, it's "one of our most efficient shows" in terms of the number of people who have viewed the show and its ability to attract new subscribers, relative to its price tag.
