Mueller spent $6.7M in Russian Federation probe

The Guardian, citing German newspaper Handelsblatt, reported that the bank has since cooperated with the request and handed over banking records to investigators.

Another $3.5 million has separately been spent by law enforcement personnel working on the investigation but who do not directly report to Mueller, DOJ said.

A U.S. official with knowledge of Mueller's probe said one reason for the subpoenas was to find out whether Deutsche Bank may have sold some of Trump's mortgage or other loans to Russian state development bank VEB or other Russian banks that now are under USA sanctions.

"The latest news supports our view that Mr. Mueller is too conflicted to investigate the FBI and should step down in favor of someone more credible", the newspaper said.

"Deutsche Bank takes its legal obligations seriously and remains committed to cooperating with authorized investigations into this matter", a company statement said.

President Donald Trump's personal lawyer John Dowd disputed that account, saying he had been told by Deutsche Bank that no such subpoena had been issued. It was the first time Mr. Trump had said anything other than Mr. Flynn was sacked for lying to Mr. Pence.

Deutsche Bank, which is one of the Trump Organisation's major lenders on its real estate projects, said it would not comment on any of its clients. Representative Maxine Waters of California and other Democrats have asked whether the bank's loans to Trump, made years before he ran for president, were in any way connected to Russian Federation. Trump's former national security adviser, Michael Flynn, pleaded guilty Friday to lying to Federal Bureau of Investigation agents, becoming the fourth associate of the president ensnared by Mueller's probe. Spending on the probe escalated rapidly as the investigation concluded, Government Accountability Office figures showed at the time. Mueller's investigation had expanded to examine a broad range of transactions involving the president's businesses, including dealings by his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, and Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, a person familiar with the probe told Bloomberg News after the publication of the Times interview.
