Nintendo brings Wii and GameCube titles to Nvidia Shield in China

A selection of Wii and Gamecube games are available for the shield - at present, only in China.

Nintendo is collaborating with Nvidia to launch classic games such as New Super Mario Bros. The games cost RMB 68, which translates to around $10 a piece. We're not jealous at all.

Meanwhile, China marks an opportunity for Nintendo.

Nintendo is bringing a smorgasbord of its older titles, including New Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Galaxy, and Twilight Princess, to China through the Nvidia Shield tablet console.

The release is an important one as Nintendo has yet to officially release the Switch in China. Of course, this raises the question how these games, designed for waggle-tastic Wii Remote, play on a console with a standard, non-motion controlled controller, and only time will tell if these are good or bad ports. Wii and Punch-out! will be remastered with 1080p visuals, looking better than they do on original hardware. Hopefully, more games and titles for the Shield TV.

Historically, Nintendo has rarely licensed its original games and characters to rival consolemakers.

Partnering with Nvidia might help Nintendo get its titles in front of Chinese consumers quicker and more effectively than if it waited for the Switch's official Chinese release (if that ever happens to begin with). Another Nintendo title coming soon for the Shield TV is Super Mario Galaxy. The Switch, after all, uses the same Tegra X1 system-on-chip as the Shield TV, and this could be a sign of what's to come. It has been created to work with Baidu's DuerOS conversational artificial intelligence (AI) system and entertainment options from IQIYI. Bloomberg spoke with analyst Hideki Yasuda, of the Ace Research Institute, who suspects it's a ploy by Nintendo to increase brand awareness in China.
