After Numerous Sexual Harassment Allegations, Sen. Al Franken Announces Resignation

The push for Franken's resignation started after a woman came forward last month to say he had badgered her into an unwanted kiss before he was a senator and groped her while she slept.

The allegations against Mr Franken began in mid-November when Leeann Tweeden, now a Los Angeles radio anchor, accused him of forcibly kissing her during a 2006 USO tour in Afghanistan. He gave ammunition to those who believe their accounts are part of a right-wing plot, and to the many who still think women who report harassment are vindictive harpies seeking to harm men.

"And the fact that my own actions have given people a good reason to doubt that makes me feel ashamed", he said. At least 28 Democratic senators and the Democratic National Committee chair called Wednesday for Franken to resign. Sen.

Addressing the Senate Thursday, the Minnesota Democrat was apologetic for any misconduct, but maintained that some of the charges against him are "simply not true. Others I remember very different".

"I know who I really am", he said.

During a speech on the Senate floor on Thursday, Franken said he was "shocked" when multiple women accused him of groping them. This decision is not about me.

During the final days of last year's presidential race, an audio recording was released in which President Donald Trump was heard explicitly bragging about grabbing women's genitalia, but he secured America's highest office nonetheless after apologizing. And while it isn't a flawless analogy because they weren't accused of sexual misconduct themselves, Missouri's Todd Akin and Indiana's Richard Mourdock lost highly winnable Senate races for Republicans in 2012 after making controversial comments about women who had been raped.

Spain Withdraws International Arrest Warrant For Catalan Separatist Leader
The exiled Catalans still face national arrest warrants in Spain, and expect to be arrested if they return there. Puigdemont's party, Junts per Catalunya (Together for Catalonia), could not be immediately reached for comment.

Moore has denied the accusations, but Trump's endorsement as well as the support of most of the Republican Party for the accused child molester has drawn fierce criticism.

Two women told the Huffington Post that Mr Franken squeezed their buttocks at political events during his first campaign for the Senate in 2008.

After Kemplin came forward, a spokesman for Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said the Democratic leader would not comment on the allegation against one of his fellow Democrats.

Senator Kirsten Gillibrand's Facebook post sounded the opening salvo Wednesday, as she declared that the nation - and Congress - faced a "moment of reckoning" regarding sexual misconduct.

"Serving in the United States senate has been the great honor of my life", Franken said, with only a handful of his colleagues in attendance. It would be highly irregular for the liberal politician to appoint a Republican to the seat.

In a well-coordinated social media attack, 12 of the Senate's 16 Democratic women took to Twitter or Facebook to demand Franken's resignation.
