Soon, Google Assistant to feature on older Android phones in India

"Earlier this year we first brought the Assistant to Android 6.0 Marshmallow and higher with Google Play Services", Google Assistant program manager Maksim Mukha wrote in a post on Google's Assistant blog. One of the main reasons for a vast roll-out of Google Assistant is the staggering numbers that show that old Android OS versions are still prevalent in the market.

Google Assistant was introduced a year ago with Pixel smartphones.

The Google Assistant, Google's take on Siri, Cortana and Alexa without the approachable name, has always been available on most modern phones and tablets. However, the update will be available for users based in the US, UK, Australia, Canada, Singapore, and India. It will also be available in Spanish but in the United States and Mexico, besides Spain of course. Multiple users are reporting that the latest version of Google's mobile OS has broken the multi-touch feature on their phones. Going forward, users based in Japan, Italy, Brazil, Germany, and Korea can also download and work with the Google Assistant.

The rise of voice-powered virtual assistants like Amazon Alexa and Apple's Siri assistant led Google to create its own offering, which is arguably the best among them.

Once you get the Google Assistant, creating a shortcut to it's as easy as opting in - you'll see an Assistant app icon in your device's app drawer. But given the fragmentation of the Android ecosystem, many older devices will never get the newer versions of Android that actually feature built-in support for the Assistant. The search-engine giant is also developing a special edition of Google Assistant for Reliance JioPhone.
