Mo Wilkerson not traveling with Jets due to tardiness

He's battled multiple injuries - including the lingering effects of a broken leg he suffered in the final game of 2015 - but he has also disappeared inexplicably for large stretches of the past two seasons.

Wilkerson, who has a history of violating team rules, won't make the trip to New Orleans.

Defensive lineman Muhammad Wilkerson will not travel with the Jets to New Orleans this weekend for their game at the Saints, Todd Bowles announced Friday in Florham Park. He calls the move a coach's decision and he's anxious only about the players who will be facing the Saints.

But it could be a good-bye for Wilkerson. Since signing a five-year, $86 million contract in July 2016, he has produced only eight sacks in 28 games. Of that amount, $36.75 million was guaranteed at signing.

It marked the third straight year that Wilkerson had been benched for a quarter for disciplinary reasons.

Wilkerson carries a salary cap figure of $20 million in 2018, but the Jets would create $11 million in cap space (with $9 million in dead money attached) by releasing him.

Wilkerson hasn't been a bad player, but he hasn't been worth that contract and he might not be worth the trouble anymore.

He's been disciplined three times for tardiness in the last three seasons, including the December 3 win over Kansas City, when he sat out the first quarter.

Wilkerson has been a regular problem for the Jets lately, and they seem done with him. He continues to set a poor example for other players on the team.

Bowles said he had a discussion with Wilkerson, who was not available for comment in the Jets locker room. The Linden native was a first-round draft pick of the Jets in 2011 out of Temple.

"Coaching decision, he won't be making the trip, he's not playing", he said. "I'm not anxious about Mo right now", he said.

Last week, a team source told the Daily News that Wilkerson is "gone" after 2017. "One team, one goal, '" said linebacker Demario Davis.

Muhammad Wilkerson is out vs. the Saints this Sunday.

Bowles wouldn't say if it was a suspension or what led to the decision.

Saints secondary coach Aaron Glenn was a first-round draft choice of the Jets in 1994 and played seven years with them as a cornerback-kick returner.
