USA declares North Korea led huge WannaCry cyberattack

Thomas Bossert, a Homeland Security adviser to President Donald Trump, laid out the Administration's case against North Korea in an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal.

The White House has publicly blamed North Korea for a ransomware attack in May that locked more than 300,000 computers in 150 countries.

While North Korea is the main focus of Bossert's claims in the Op-Ed, he does not forget to talk about alleged 2016 election meddling by Russian hackers or the US's issues with Iran either.

North Korea has defended its actions by claiming such weapons were necessary to deter a USA invasion, but Trump and a number of other countries have accused Kim and his government of threatening the stability of the region. He implored private companies to build up their defenses against North Korea and other "bad actors" in cyberspace, and singled out Microsoft in particular for taking actions last week to "disrupt activities of North Korean hackers", without elaborating on the details.

This was enough, at the time, to insinuate North Korea was behind Wannacry, though researchers warned it was "well short of poof, " and that copying snippets of code is not uncommon among unrelated hacker groups.

Earlier this year, the group went on a world tour that took in the USA and released their fifth album, titled Five. The group, formed by SM Entertainment , shot to fame after the release of their debut EP, Replay, in 2008.

Bossert also called the attack reckless, while Reuters cites a "senior administration official" who declined to comment on whether or not the United States believes it was a deliberate attack or accidental. A few weeks ago, we charged three Chinese nationals for hacking, theft of trade secrets and identity theft. He noted that the Trump administration has banned the use of Kaspersky software from government systems over concerns that the software could abet Russian espionage, and that the government has also charged Iranian hackers who attacked usa companies such as HBO.

Lazarus Group is widely believed by security researchers and USA officials to have been responsible for the 2014 hack of Sony Pictures Entertainment, which destroyed files, leaked corporate communications online and led to the departure of several top studio executives.

North Korea has reportedly denied any involvement with WannaCry. "Mr. Trump has already pulled many levers of pressure to address North Korea's unacceptable nuclear and missile developments, and we will continue to use our maximum pressure strategy to curb Pyongyang's ability to mount attacks, cyber or otherwise".

Independent research groups have previously attributed the attack to North Korea. The four-day joint military drills ended on December 15.
