Apple to Launch Upgraded AirPods in the Second Half of 2018

Following news this week that Apple has sold-out of AirPods in numerous countries around the world amid the busy holiday shopping season, a new report from KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggests Apple is planning an "upgraded" version of AirPods to launch during 2018.

The new model could feature a smaller quartz component from supplier TXC, however, externally Kuo doesn't expect the new model to look much different than the original.

Apple AirPods are sold out on its online store until next year - but the wireless earbuds may still get a major refresh in 2018.

The analyst predicts that the upgraded AirPods will come with hardware improvements. The mat is also anticipated to launch at some point in 2018.

Apple has already announced a new AirPower inductive charging case for next year. It can be used to charge the Apple Watch Series 3, iPhone X, iPhone 8, and AirPods simultaneously.

Apple has sold out for AirPods, its wireless headphones created to work with iPhones and iPads, with a week left until Christmas. The best promise to date is a release "early next year". However, Apple CEO Tim Cook did mention supply issues with Airpods during the company's earnings call in May.

But if you had your eye on a pair of AirPods this Christmas, don't despair.

Kuo has also stated that Apple has recruited Luxshare to help with manufacturing AirPods, but the primary limiting factor for production is the lack of availability of RF printed-circuit boards used for the AirPods battery.
