Apple will reportedly unify iOS and macOS apps in 2018

Cupertino is now targetting the release of iOS 12 and macOS 10.14 for the launch of its new unified platform for apps.

Apple might start to converge iOS and macOS in a big way next year by letting developers create a single app that runs across both platforms. As a result, the apps that do make it to the Mac App Store are often given less attention than their mobile counterparts, which means fewer updates and less upkeep.

The app, which appears to have passed Apple's App Store screening is not an official mobile title from Studio MDHR. But the tipsters said that the plan is "still fluid" and may see the implementation undergo major changes or even get scrapped altogether.

Bloomeberg also pointed out that the iOS App Store has recently been redesigned while the Mac App Store hasn't been refreshed since 2014.

As part of the revamp, Apple also separated games, which brought some order to the App Store's offerings, and sought to give less flashy apps more room to stand out.

Under Project Marzipan, developers would be able to create a single app for all machines, including Mac, iPad, and iPhone. Apple is reportedly planning to give users a single set of apps that work equally well on iPhones, iPads, and Macs.

"The UWP (Universal Windows Platform) provides a guaranteed core API across devices", Microsoft explains on the system's website.

The new universal app system could be announced during Apple's annual Worldwide Developers Conference during the summer, when the company usually tends to reveal upcoming software improvements. Will Apple go there? "You can converge a toaster and a refrigerator, but those things are probably not going to be pleasing to the user", Cook said in 2012. Around the same time, Apple software chief Craig Federighi called the blending of iOS and macOS "a compromise". On the iPad, the same app can be used in different layouts depending on how it is being presented, full-screen or in Split View multitasking.
