Apple might be slowing down old iPhones to preserve battery life

Like most people, you might be considering the option of replacing the phone entirely without attempting to have it checked out.

Singapore Polytechnic student Kirstin Yip, 19, who has owned three iPhones, including the 6s and 7 models, said: "As a millenial, I'm always on my phone, so fast performance is important to me".

As batteries get older, they don't hold their charges as well as newer batteries, and can have worse problems when the charge is low or the temperature is cold.

To address that, Apple's iOS software, starting with last year's iOS 10.2.1, included better power management capabilities, the company says.

"I don't think they'd lose customers [to Samsung] ... if you're an Apple love, you're an Apple lover". But when a developer tried a different type of test, he discovered that previous generation iPhones (specifically iPhone 6 and iPhone 7) with aging batteries confirmed the conspiracy theory.

This Self-Healing Glass Could Fix Your Phone Woes
Currently, the development of self-healing glasses could be deemed as a significant game changer in the smartphone industry. We might soon say goodbye to broken phone screens, thanks to a student who accidentally invented self-healing glass .

Since then, Apple has confirmed that it is throttling iPhone performance as iPhone batteries age and their capacity deteriorates.

Apple said previous year it had released a feature for iPhone 6, iPhone 6s and iPhone SE to help avoid such blackouts.

Further reports indicate that critics and experts agree that instead of slowing down the processing speed of the devices, Apple should give loyal users the option to replace the battery. "Lithium-ion batteries become less capable of supplying peak current demands when in cold conditions, have a low battery charge or as they age over time, which can result in the device unexpectedly shutting down to protect its electronic components", Apple said in a statement to TechCrunch. With the recent iOS 11.2 operating upgrade, it's extending that feature to iPhone 7 and plans to add it to future products. But the number one reason for upgrading was longer battery life. But it's largely shrugged off with smartphones - it doesn't help that the battery is not user replaceable.

Replacing an iPhone battery with Apple is free if the handset is still under warranty.

"The phone shutting down by itself and having a shorter battery life are minor inconveniences by comparison". Consumers could say they were confused and had no real information to go by, so buying a new iPhone was probably the best decision.
