Federal Bureau of Investigation 'thwarted San Francisco Christmas terror attack' - court documents

"Jameson specifically named Pier 39 in San Francisco as a target location because he had been there before and knew that it was a heavily crowded area, and that, according to Jameson, no reconnaissance or site survey would be necessary (because Jameson already was familiar with the area)".

Jameson also voiced support for the October 31, 2017 terror attack in New York City during which a driver used his truck to kill eight people and mentioned the 2015 San Bernardino attack, the report said.

The 26-year-old reportedly stated that "Christmas was the ideal day" for a terror attack in San Francisco and "did not need an escape plan because he was ready to die".

Everitt Aaron Jameson, 26, a Modesto tow-truck driver, was charged on Friday with attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organisation. The note also seemed to express anger over President Donald Trump's recent decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

The FBI says he wanted to use explosives to "funnel" people into a location where he could inflict casualties. The FBI executed a search warrant on his home on December 20 and allegedly found multiple firearms and explosives materials. An FBI employee called Jameson's mobile phone and hung up when Jameson answered in Arabic. Jameson called the number back but the employee let it go to his voicemail, which identified his name but not that he was a federal agent.

The agent learned Jameson had prior military experience with the U.S. Marine Corps. The agent said the NY attack he was referring to was the October 31 attack during which a driver used his truck to killed 9 people. He attended basic recruit training and earned a sharpshooter rifle qualification.

The targeted time period is especially notable because the Cavaliers face Irving and the Celtics on January 3 in Boston. Thomas has missed the entire season so far as he continues to recover from an injury to his right hip.

He also allegedly told the agent that he was trained in both the M-16 and an AK-47 rifle and said that he needed timers and remote detonators for the explosives.

"Our incredible law enforcement officers have once again helped thwart an alleged plot to kill Americans. But I can't", Jameson said.

He was arrested on Friday and faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted.

FBI spokeswoman Katherine Zackel ensured the public that during the course of the FBI's investigation, the suspect "was under surveillance by law enforcement, and the public was never in imminent danger".

San Francisco Mayor Breed said that "there are no known additional threats to San Francisco related to this investigation". "We will not allow the thwarted attempts of one unsafe individual to disrupt our way of life".

"We are grateful that our hardworking law enforcement partners remain vigilant in protecting our communities, especially during this holiday season", U.S. Attorney Phillip Talbert said in a statement.
