Anti-government protests spread across Iran, as 52 arrested

Thousands of people also marched in protest in cities of Qom (central Iran), Hamedan (west), Isfahan (central Iran), Shiraz (southern Iran), Rasht, Sari and Qaemshahr (northern Iran), Qazvin (northwest of Tehran), Khorramshahr and Ahwaz (southwestern Iran), Khorramabad (western Iran), Quchan, Bojnourd, and Sabzevar (eastern Iran).

Videos purporting to be of the protests in Iran's second-largest city circulated widely on social media platforms including Twitter and Telegram, and showed protesters chanting against President Hassan Rouhani and calling for "the economically corrupt" to be executed. Protesters shouted slogans such as "death to Rouhani" and "death to the dictator", referring to Iran's supreme leader Ali Khamenei. "Forget Syria, think of us" read the protesters' banners.

Mrs. Rajavi called on all the people, especially the youth and women throughout the country, to join the "No to High Prices" uprising, saying that "the corrupt dictatorship of the mullahs will undoubtedly fail against your national unity and solidarity, resistance and continuity of your rightful uprisings".

The governor of Mashhad, Mohammad Rahim Norouzian, said that "the demonstration was illegal but the police dealt with people with tolerance".

A number of protestors had been arrested for "trying to damage public property", he added.

The semiofficial Ilna news agency reported there were smaller protests in Neyshabour, Kashmar, Yazd, and Shahroud. Protesters were filmed shouting anti-government slogans such as "death to the dictator" and "death to Rouhani". Farmers have blamed the hikes on higher prices for imported feed.

Several provinces this week reported the price of eggs had risen by up to 50 percent, according to the semi-official Iranian Students News Agency.
