Weah elected as new Liberian leader

"Warm congratulations to George Oppong Weah on his decisive victory in Liberia's peaceful presidential run-off, thus becoming the next President of the Republic Liberia", Akufo-Addo wrote on via his official Facebook account.

"Liberians have a certain sense of hope that George Weah will change the status quo, that he will bring transformation to the country", Ms Neaiai Pailey said.

He has drawn some criticism for picking Jewel Howard-Taylor, the powerful ex-wife of former warlord and president Charles Taylor, as his vice-president.

While wishing Weah and Liberians a peaceful transition, Buhari reassured them of Nigeria's determination to sustain the current cordial relationship with the country.

He pledged Nigeria's readiness to work with Liberia on issues of mutual interest at bilateral, regional and global levels for the benefit of citizens of both countries.

The 51-year-old Weah, a senator who entered politics after his 2002 retirement from soccer, led the first-round vote in October but didn't receive enough ballots to win outright over the 73-year-old Boakai, who has been vice president for 12 years.

This is Liberia's first peaceful transfer of power from one democratically elected head of state to another in more than 70 years.

The former FIFA World Player of the Year played with AS Monaco and Paris Saint-Germain, among others.

Addressing supporters in Monrovia, Boakai promised to provide support to Weah, but he also reminded him of Liberia's fragile economy and the challenges that lie ahead.

The new president is expected to take office in January.

In a nationwide broadcast from his party's headquarters in Monrovia on Friday, Mr. Boakai who was flanked by his supporters and party leaders, said he had already called Mr. Weah to congratulate him.

Preliminary results showed Mr Weah won Tuesday's run-off with 61.5 per cent of the vote, based on more than 98 per cent of the ballots cast. Vice President Joseph Boakai has accepted defeat.

Weah, a retired worldwide footballer and standard bearer of the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) was declared victor on Friday after the Boxing Day run-off polls by Liberia's national electoral commission. She led the country from back-to-back civil wars and saw it through a deadly Ebola outbreak.
