Saints lose to Buccaneers, win NFC South anyway

Bucs QB Jameis Winston threw a flawless 39-yard strike to Chris Godwin, capping off a 95-yard game winning drive, as Tampa stunned New Orleans, 31-24, Sunday. The Bucs went 95 yards from their own 5-yard line without a timeout in less than two minutes.

After three consecutive incompletions, Winston found tight end Cameron Brate for a 12-yard gain on fourth-and-10 and the dramatic drive was on. The Saints stopped one Tampa drive when rookie safety Marcus Williams made his third interception of the season and on another when linebacker Craig Robertson picked off Winston. He dropped the New Orleans signal caller for a loss of seven on third-and-3 that forced the Saints to give the ball back.

The Saints didn't end the regular season the way they wanted, losing to the Bucs, 31-24. It was the kind of game which will provide some degree of hope for a 5-11 team, which is bringing back coach Dirk Koetter.

But Saints return man Tommylee Lewis was stripped by Tampa Bay's Josh Robinson and the fumble was recovered by Isaiah Johnson, who scooped it up and scored from the 7. His last came on a third down after the Bucs had been in the red zone, taking away a potential go-ahead field goal in the third quarter. Kamara would add a 7-yard rushing touchdown and a 40-yard catch, continuing a phenomenal rookie season.

New Orleans Saints running backs Mark Ingram and Alvin Kamara have combined to have outstanding seasons.

The Buccaneers (4-11) scored on a pair of 1-yard runs, the first by Peyton Barber and the second by quarterback Jameis Winston. The Bucs wouldn't quite even the score as kicker Patrick Murray pulled the extra point wide right, giving the Saints a narrow 14-13 lead going into halftime.
