Fog disrupts flights in Delhi

Passengers heading to New Delhi and other northern regions of the Country from Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA), Shamshabad had to wait for long hours on Monday as many flights were delayed due to heavy fog in New Delhi.

Not only this, dense fog has engulfed the entire northwestern plains. About 35 flights were cancelled. According to an airport official, flights were stopped from taking off between 6 and 10 a.m., while landing on nearly all flights was delayed.

Departures require a visibility of at least 125 metres, while planes can land in visibility below 50 metres if the pilots are trained in CAT IIIB technology for low-visibility landings that allows qualified aircraft to land in visibility of 25-50 metres. This is also an improvement, as RVR was in the range of 50-100 metres in the last two days.

Yesterday, the maximum and minimum temperatures were recorded at 22.6 and 7.2 degrees Celsius respectively. The three-hour suspension of flight operations meant that it took hours for the backlog to clear. More than 64 trains were reported running late and 24 had to be rescheduled. Some 15 were cancelled. An official of the department said that it was the densest fog of this season.
