The brightest full moon of the year is tonight

A rare "Wolf Moon" last night ushered in the New Year as it lit up the skies above Britain and is set to reach its peak tonight.

While a blue moon - the second of two full moons occurring in the same month - happens roughly every 2½ years, the phenomenon of two blue moons in a calendar year appears only a handful of times a century.

January 31's supermoon, according to the space agency, will also feature a total lunar eclipse - when the Earth, sun and moon, line up in such a way that the Earth blocks the sunlight that would otherwise reflect off the moon.

In addition, the so-called "full supermoon" appeared 30 percent brighter than an average full moon, according to NASA. Marie, Timmins and Elliot Lake will enjoy a view of the full lunar eclipse beginning about 6:50 a.m. and lasting about 12 minutes while North Bay, Sudbury, Manitoulin Island, Guelph and Barrie will be able to view a partial lunar eclipse at that time.

Don't expect a blue color, though, the event has nothing to with the color of the moon. This one showed the supermoon rising over Rome. But let's stick with Wolf Moon, it sounds a bit more like a Nineties rap album.

Bombing Attack Kills 41 In Kabul; ISIS Claims Responsibility
Security in Afghanistan is rapidly deteriorating following the withdrawal of worldwide forces from the country 3 years ago. In October, ISIS claimed responsibility for twin attacks on Shiite mosques in Afghanistan that killed almost 60 people.

On January 15, the moon is estimated to be 406,423 kilometers away.

The moon just like the Earth does not have a completely round orbit. It was the closest approach to Earth since 1948.

And there have been some pretty amusing reactions to seeing the moon, presumably because the only other choice late on New Year's Day is watching the final of the darts or a Bond movie.

Furthermore, there was a supermoon on December 3 and there will be yet another one on January 31 to complete the "Supermoon Trilogy" - much to the delight of photographers looking for creative opportunities.

"As long as it's clear out, you'll have no trouble seeing the moon at all", she said.
