North Korea Mistakenly Bombed Own City During Failed Missile Test

The Tokyo-based Diplomat news website has reported that a missile test conducted in early 2017 went wrong and landed in a city instead.

An allegedly unsuccessful test of a North Korean ballistic missile that exploded over a densely populated area has raised concerns about the possibility of similar accidents happening over the country's capital Pyongyang or other populated areas, The Diplomat has reported.

The particular experiment was the third attempt by North Korea to ideal its Hwasong-12 missile.

The missile was said to be a single Hwasong-12/KN17 intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM) launched from Pukchang Airfield in South Pyongan Province, that later, crashed into Tokchon.

Observers are also anxious that neighboring countries may regard it as an act of provocation or war should North Korean missiles and rockets veer off course and hit unintended foreign targets in South Korea, Japan or even China.

In the weeks after the failed April 28 launch one of three failures in that month - the Hwasong-12 enjoyed a successful launch on May 14.

This screenshot from Google Maps shows the complex allegedly damaged by North Korea's failed missile test launch on April 29.

Since the earliest days of ballistic missiles by Nazi Germany in World War II, the most risky moments in missile tests and firing are the launch and immediate post-launch phases. North Korea launched its first ICBM back in July and the U.S. did nothing but impose more sanctions.

The aggressive missile tests in the past few years have escalated tensions in the political arena between Pyongyang and Washington.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un inspects the long-range strategic ballistic rocket Hwasong-12 (Mars-12) in this undated photo released by North Korea's Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) on May 15, 2017.

In his News Year's speech televised nationally, Kim stated: "The United States can never fight a war against me and our state".

However, the cold relationship between South Korea and the North showed signs of thawing in the beginning of 2018. The Trump administration says all options are on the table, including military measures against the North. Moon has repeatedly said he opposes any war on the Korean Peninsula. He insisted that high-level negotiators from both Koreas meet at Panmunjom, situated at the border, next Tuesday to discuss the North's Olympic participation. "We once again express our honest hope that the Pyeongchang Olympics will be successful".
