North Korea to reopen key cross-border communication system with South Korea

In a morning tweet, Trump said the us -led campaign of sanctions and other pressure were beginning to have a "big impact" on North Korea.

Trump mocked that assertion, writing, "Will someone from his depleted and food starved regime please inform him that I too have a Nuclear Button, but it is a much bigger & more powerful one than his, and my Button works!"

But in that address, he also said that he was willing to send a delegation to the Winter Olympics, which are set to take place in Pyeongchang in South Korea next month and proposed a dialogue with the South.

Kim said he has a "nuclear button" on his office desk and warned that "the whole territory of the U.S.is within the range of our nuclear strike".

The UK-based Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) also weighed in Wednesday morning, urging that Trump's "childish games must stop". North Korean leader Kim Jong Un reopened a key cross-border communication channel with South Korea for the first time in almost two years Wednesday as the rivals explored the possibility of sitting down and talking after months of acrimony and fears of war.

On Thursday, the USA and South Korea announced that they would delay annual joint military exercises ahead of the Winter Olympics. In essence, Kim is asking the United States and South Korea to defer or cancel readiness-enhancing joint military exercises scheduled for 2018 as the price for a peaceful Olympic games. South Korea and the United States are technically still at war with North Korea after the 1950-53 Korean conflict ended with a truce, not a peace treaty. Moon and Trump had a telephone conversation for about 30 minutes earlier in the day, discussing issues of mutual concern relating to the possible inter-Korean talks created by taking the opportunity for the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games, according to the Blue House, the presidential palace. While Kim's strategy poses risks created to pressure Moon and open up a breach in the U.S. -ROK alliance, who can blame Moon for trying to find ways to avert Kim from his longer-term trajectory of conflict with the United States? "We consider this to be a very reckless regime".

In an interview with USA broadcaster Voice of America, Pence said the president's leadership on the world stage has resulted in "measurable progress", especially on the issue of North Korea's nuclear and ballistic missile programs.

U.S. President Donald Trump and his South Korean counterpart Moon Jae-in announced on Thursday that annual large-scale military drills would now take place after the Olympics. Moon has long said he sees the Pyeongchang Olympics as a chance to improve inter-Korean ties.
