Tamil Nadu: High Court asks bus strikers to resume services

In some towns, strikers got into the scuffle with operational buses.

The striking unions wanted the "factor" for revision to be fixed at 2.57 while the government insisted it be 2.44.

"The new wage structure had the highest revision proposed with a minimum of Rs2,684 and a maximum of Rs11,361. hope the employees get back to work", the minister said. If the government takes action, the employees must face it.

A majority of the people continued to rely on trains, autorickshaws and private buses for their daily commute.

The strike began on Friday after the failed talks between the union and state transport authorities.

Meanwhile, the Southern Railway, in an official release, said, "It is chose to operate weekday services instead of weekend reduced services in Chennai Beach-Tambaram and MRTS suburban sector to accommodate extra rush in view of the strike".

Sources said that a total of 200 buses were operated in the city this morning. In Madurai, Salem and Tirunelveli very few buses plied.

"There are no buses and it is hard to find auto as a lot of them are already occupied". The government just about managed to operate bus services with a skeletal fleet that AIADMK-affiliated unions were left to run. Besides, private buses were also roped in to meet the situation at several places.

Apart from the latest talks, the trade unions have earlier held 10 rounds of talks with the government and have demanded an increase of 2.57% hike.

At a press conference here on Friday, the trade union leaders said the State government, while doubling the salaries to elected representatives, government officials and judges, was not willing to accept their "demands" of pay hike, repayment of ₹7,000 crore owed to the workers, including retired employees. On the other hand, former transport minister Senthil Balaji, a supporter of T T V Dhinakaran, came out in support of the striking unions and faulted the government for the strike.

State Transport Minister M R Vijayabaskar said many staff have returned to work today and expressed confidence that normal operations could resume tomorrow.

The government today called for temporary drivers to operate buses.

DMK working president MK Stalin urged chief minister Edapaddi Palaniswami to end the imbroglio by holding talks with the unions and giving them a "good Pongal gift". Those who have heavy vehicle license have been asked to approach the managers of the bus depots.
