Conte On Barkley: He Has Great Potential

Conte On Barkley: He Has Great Potential

Former Everton midfielder Leon Osman says Ross Barkley must "prove he is still the player he was" amid reports he is close to a £15million move to Chelsea. Yes he could have signed a new deal and still been that big fish in a small pond, but if he wants to become one of England's best - he had to leave. He can have good prospects for Chelsea.

Now at Chelsea, he has that chance to let his talent blossom and although it won't be easy at Stamford Bridge - if he can succeed, then the world will be at his feet.

"I think sometimes when you are at your home club, you can be there too long and you have to learn the different levels of the game".

Upon signing for Chelsea, Barkley told Chelsea's website: 'I'm overwhelmed, I'm looking forward to it and I'm really excited to get started.

Just an hour prior to that, Law had tweeted that Chelsea had made a new bid, but with talks "accelerating", there is now a sense that the deal could be done as soon as today (Friday). I think the club decided for this investment also for his contract.

"For sure he is a good prospect for Chelsea".

The England worldwide nearly joined the Premier League champions in the summer, only for the transfer to collapse at the last minute.

Conte urged caution over expectations for Barkley.

"I've [managed teams who have] played against him a couple of times and he's been terrific and killed us on a couple of occasions".

The Italian added: 'Don't forget he had a bad injury, he had surgery.

Conte declined to address rumours West Ham striker Andy Carroll was a target, saying transfers were not his remit.

Barkley had less than six months remaining on his Everton contract to throw up the possibility of the Toffees losing their home grown talent for nothing next summer.

Eden Hazard, who was likely to be rested anyway, is a doubt after being kicked on the calf in Wednesday's draw at Arsenal.
