Fodder Scam verdict: JDU calls it a 'historic decision in Bihar politics'

Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad on Saturday was sentenced to three-and-a-half years jail in a fodder scam case by the Special CBI court in Ranchi. "If Lalu ji had done compromise with BJP, he would be the most truthful person for them like Raja Harishchandra". Meanwhile, addressing a press conference in Patna, Lalu's son Tejashwi Yadav said the party would go to the people after makarsankranti to make them aware of the "conspiracy" hatched by Nitish Kumar and the BJP against the RJD chief.

Yadav, 69, is a former railways minister and ex-chief minister of the impoverished eastern state of Bihar where he enjoys huge popular support for championing lower castes.

Media reports quoting the opinions of lawyers said that the veteran politician can be awarded three to seven years in prison.

RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav and 15 others were convicted in a fodder scam case. The conviction in this case pertains to embezzling of more than Rs89 lakh from the Deoghar Treasury between 1991 and 1994.

Tamil Nadu: High Court asks bus strikers to resume services
The government just about managed to operate bus services with a skeletal fleet that AIADMK-affiliated unions were left to run. A majority of the people continued to rely on trains, autorickshaws and private buses for their daily commute.

Lalu Prasad is at present cooling his heels in Birsa Munda Central Jail in Ranchi. Trial began before the special CBI court, Ranchi in February 2002. After spending two months in jail, Supreme Court granted bail to Prasad in the first fodder scam case.

Tejashwi accused NDA government of hatching a plot against Lalu for he was the only force that was uniting opposition ahead of 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

Earlier in the day, Lalu's wife Rabri Devi has called an emergency meeting to decide the individual roles for party leaders in likely absence of the RJD chief. "It is the end of a chapter".

The verdict on Saturday came after two postponements of the pronouncement of the quantum of punishment after the court found the RJD chief guilty in December previous year.
