Astros acquire pitcher Gerrit Cole from Pirates

The Yankees engaged the Pirates last month about Cole, but they were unwilling to surrender top prospects Gleyber Torres and Estevan Florial in the deal, instead discussing Clint Frazier, Miguel Andujar and Chance Adams.

Yet Astros owner Jim Crane has been public in his desire to land another quality pitcher, telling's Alyson Footer on Monday the team is "actively pursuing a high-end starter".

The Houston Astros reportedly made a major addition to their pitching staff Wednesday, trading for Pittsburgh Pirates ace Gerrit Cole.

The Yankees had been in trade talks with the Pirates about Cole for several weeks. Cole completes a very strong rotation behind Justin Verlander and provides insurance should Dallas Keuchel and Lance McCullers struggle with injuries again next season.

However, the 2011 No. 1 overall pick still has top-of-the-rotation stuff with a fastball in the upper-90s and a plus curveball and changeup.

In five years with the Pirates, Cole has a 59-42 record with a 3.50 ERA, averaging 156 innings a season in 127 starts. His best season came in 2015 when he went 19-8 with a 2.60 ERA and 202 strikeouts in 32 starts.
