The club are not commenting on the matter, but it is understood that a grievance meeting has been scheduled. It is hoped the investigation will conclude quickly.

Players who have given statements regarding the alleged bullying and racism will be interviewed by the club in the coming weeks.

Beardsley is due to meet chief executive Lee Charnley and head of safeguarding Steve Swinyard on Monday, with a representative from the Professional Footballers Association also present.

He was cleared of bullying allegations by the Premier League in 2003 during his first spell as a coach.
