Facebook Testing Local News & Events Section in its App

Now, it seems those publishers are nearly as out of luck as the phony publishers Facebook has tried to scrub from the News Feed.

Facebook has introduced a series of changes meant to address the problem.

These changes will probably not seem drastic to many users.

Facebook has been under fire for months over what it shows people and whether its site has negatively influenced millions of its users.

There are no plans yet for an global test, despite the new product launching as Facebook, along with other technology platforms such as Google, faces increased scrutiny from regulatory bodies across the world.

Facebook co-founder and chief Mark Zuckerberg has said that bringing people together and strengthening communities in the real world are priorities. In 2016, fake news infiltrated Facebook, and posts from foreign actors were blamed for impacting the presidential election.

"We've gotten feedback from our community that public content - posts from businesses, brands and media - is crowding out the personal moments that lead us to connect more with each other", wrote Mr Zuckerberg.

We are going to lead the fight against climate change as if our lives depended on it. Naturally, the move prompted swift condemnation from the fossil fuel industry.

For now Facebook has stated that the commoners will still be able to see content from the pages they want to see if they use the "See First" button but over the years that function has not worked well because many people will not take the time to personalize their experience.

"By making these changes, I expect the time people spend on Facebook and some measures of engagement will go down", Mr Zuckerberg wrote. More recently, he began signaling that Facebook was rethinking what it shows people on the site. On the other hand, passively scrolling through social media does not. It was all part of the company's effort to build up its video advertising business, commanding higher CPMs than typically run on text-based websites.

"This big wave of public content has really made us reflect: What are we really here to do?"

Zuckerberg said he was now focusing his company around the new approach. "For advertisers, this will mean a focus on quality, rather than volume".

Zuckerberg has been laying the groundwork for making that fundamental shift in all of Facebook's products. He said he had rethought the way he views his and Facebook's legacy, even if it will cost the company in the short term.

"There should be public debate about the values they're applying to that algorithm", he said.
