Trump decision looms over Iran deal as Europe watches

The EU's top diplomat, Federica Mogherini, said the deal, denounced by Trump as the worst ever made, had in reality "made the world safer and prevented a potential nuclear arms race in the region".

Senior White House officials and congressional leadership are scrambling to save the Iran nuclear deal and convince President Donald Trump to again waive key sanctions on the Islamic Republic despite opposition, according to multiple sources working on the matter who spoke to the Washington Free Beacon.

The other signatories to the accord - Britain, China, Germany, France, and Russian Federation - and the European Union continue to support the agreement.

Trump has until Friday to sign a waiver on these sanctions that extends the nuclear deal terms periodically.

However, over the past year, the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump has imposed new sanctions against a number of Iranian and global entities which have, allegedly, had links with Iran's developing pace of missile program. "IAEA has verified Iran's full compliance, but continuation will depend on full USA compliance", Zarif tweeted from Moscow.

Washington has been more forthright than Europe in supporting the protests and implying that regime change is a realistic possibility.

It seems that Iranian administration has concluded that the USA is determined to exit from the nuclear deal.

British Foreign Minister Boris Johnson said that no better option had been put forward to prevent Iran from constructing nuclear weapons. The time has come for Trump to realize that the United States can no longer tolerate Iranian expansion, and the moderate, pro-American Arab countries are waiting for signs of United States action.

"The [UN's International Atomic Energy Agency] has confirmed in nine reports that Iran is fully complying with the commitments made under the agreement, and its continued successful implementation ensures that Iran's nuclear programme remains exclusively peaceful".

Trump formally rejected the deal in October, although the United States has not yet pulled out. But Mr. Trump warned it remained a possibility. Bob Corker (R., Tenn.) is said to be working with Senate Democrats on new legislation to hold Iran accountable for its ongoing ballistic missile construction and other rogue activities.

The Europeans say these issues should be kept separate from discussion of the nuclear deal, but in a nod to U.S. concerns, Mogherini stressed they were raised with Zarif at Thursday's talks.

"Salehi said that in case the US fails to honor its commitments under the Iran nuclear deal, Iran will adopt measures that can affect the current trend of Iran's cooperation with the agency", the Iranian report said. As is customary, the Secretary of State has been designated to sign the waivers, so Rex Tillerson will be the one to notify Congress of the administration's decision Friday - but only after Trump consults with his national security team and makes the final call. Among the protesters' grievances were complaints that the nuclear accord has failed to quickly boost the Iranian economy as promised by its key backers, including Iranian President Hassan Rouhani.
