Sault Ste. Marie out of the running to host Amazon headquarters

The online-retailer announced their top 20 candidates in a news release Thursday morning. The company plans to spend more than $5 billion to build the new headquarters and could end up employing as many as 50,000 people there.

In addition to thousands of jobs and billions in investment, the second headquarters' construction and operation could push beyond initial economic impact estimates.

Greenville and Spartanburg put in a combined bid for the headquarters - touting the area as "Charlanta" - on Interstate 85 between Atlanta and Charlotte.

Amazon said it will make a final selection sometime in 2018.

Current Amazon employees receive perks like health and disability insurance, company stock, and paid leave, and it's likely the workers at HQ2 will, as well. Of the 20 finalists, 13, including New York, Chicago and Miami, declined requests from The Associated Press to release their applications.

Following Apple's announcement on Wednesday that it would build a new campus and create 20,000 new jobs as part of a $30 billion investment, it also underlines the growing power of USA technology companies over the economy.

'Text bomb' bug slows down Apple's iPhones and Macs
As we reported yesterday , the chaiOS bug centres around a link that, when delivered, will stop the affected device in its tracks. In 2015 Apple has already faced a same issue when iMessage was brought down by a string of Unicode characters .

The almost two dozen now double down to compete for a $5 billion capital investment and 50,000 new tech-oriented jobs.

He reportedly has said that Amazon was looking at two sites along the Ohio River: The Banks in downtown Cincinnati and the 13-acre Ovation development in Newport, located between the Taylor Southgate Bridge and the Licking River.

The bidding process has been extremely competitive and a little insane, with cities offering Amazon everything from a giant cactus (thank you, Tuscon) to maybe, kinda sorta offering to fight a bear for the company (we're looking at you, Calgary, Alberta). The RFEI seeks locations suggestions from land owners, developers, businesses and other stakeholders so the city can make a unified pitch, according to Bloomberg.

Cities made splashy attempts to attract the company's attention.

Over the past five years, Amazon said it has invested more than $100 billion in the US, including corporate offices, development and research centers, fulfillment infrastructure, and compensation to its teams. As for incentives, Florida argues, "The 20 finalists would be well-served by making a pact to NO INCENTIVES. Jeff Bezos, Amazon's chief executive who was the mastermind behind turning the search into a public process and coined the term 'HQ2, ' was also involved".
