Facebook to prioritise 'trustworthy' news based on surveys

Facebook will ask users if they are familiar with a news source and more importantly, if they trust that news source via surveys.

Barely a week after making the major announcement of revamping Facebook's news feed, founder Mark Zuckerberg has made another major announcement.

Previously, Facebook changed its focus on news feed by announcing that they were refocusing on items shared by your friends and family, instead of just straight news.

The change comes as the online giant seeks to address charges that it has failed - along with Google and Twitter - to prevent the spread of bogus news, most strikingly ahead of the 2016 United States presidential election.

To do so, he said, Facebook chose to rely on member surveys as the most "objective" way to rank trust in news sources.

In the "fake news" battle that has set media sources against social media in many cases, Facebook Inc.

The hard question we've struggled with is how to decide what news sources are broadly trusted in a world with so much division.

The earlier News Feed update to show more updates from family and friends will result in less public content, including news, video, and posts from brands in your News Feed, he noted.

Facebook will then prioritize news that is trustworthy, informative, and local.

As part of its recent effort to make users' experiences more personal and cut down on fake news, Facebook will be asking its online community whether they trust certain news outlets. This data will help to inform ranking in News Feed. "This is a big change, but news will always be a critical way for people to start conversations on important topics", the Facebook CEO said.

Two years ago, Facebook users saw hoaxes saying Pope Francis endorsed Republican Donald Trump for United States president and that a federal agent investigating Democrat Hillary Clinton was found dead.

Mosseri in a blog post said, "In 2018, we will prioritize: news from publications that the community rates as trustworthy, news that people find informative and news that is relevant to people's local community".

According to him, the new update will not change the amount of news people see on Facebook.

Facebook said that news outlets that are "broadly trusted" might see a huge uptick in traffic, while less trusted sources may see a downswing.

The impact will vary from Page to Page, driven by factors, including the type of content they produce and how people interact with it.
