Watch Tiger Woods completely struggle while double-bogeying a hole

He was steady, and at times spectacular.

Needing a birdie on the 556-yard, par-5 ninth hole at the Torrey Pines North Course, Woods reached the green in two and two-putted from 80 feet, finishing with a tap-in.

It wasn't until No. 1 - his 10th hole - that he holed a 40-footer for his first birdie of the day and things began to turn.

In his first official start since this time previous year, Woods took a while to dust off the rust, but the quality of his shotmaking improved as the round progressed on the South course at Torrey Pines.

Palmer boasts a one-shot advantage from defending champion Jon Rahm at the top of the leaderboard after a five-under 67 took him to 11 under after 36 holes.

All eyes have been focused on Woods this week, both because it's his first PGA-sanctioned tournament in 12 months and to see how his surgically-repaired back would hold up as he goes through the grind of a full-scale event after playing in the Hero World Challenge last month.

Smith was a shot back through one round, but overnight leader Brooke Henderson dropped a shot on her only hole played of the second round and Smith did not even get on to the course.

It was not possible to independently verify the accounts as Myanmar has heavily restricted access to the area. Only refugees with identity documents — which most Rohingya lack — will be allowed back into Myanmar .

Woods made the turn at 2-over 38 after a awful double-bogey on the par-4 13th (his fourth hole of the day), apparently out of the running for the weekend. That's no longer the case with the North getting a makeover two years ago, with bent greens that are firm this week and narrower fairways.

That even par start left him outside the projected cut line, but he did himself no favours by carving his tee shot so far left it was closer to the first fairway on the South Course than the stretch of short stuff he was aiming for. "I need to get used to what my feels are, what angles I need".

Woods says spinal fusion surgery in April has left him feeling better than he has in years.

And then there's Phil Mickelson, playing a home game of sorts on a golf course he played on as a youth, right in the mix at 6-under thanks in part to an eagle on No. 13 and a closing birdie on 18. Before he hit the shot, Nick Faldo said on the Golf Channel telecast that it was a 1-in-20 chance Woods gets it up and down.

After his even-par 72 Thursday, he's one under for the tournament and 10 behind leader Ryan Palmer.

That was just enough to make the cut - his first since the Wyndham Championship in August of 2015 where he finished tied for 10th. Well-executed chip left him a short putt. From there his approach missed left and his ensuing chip ran just off the green.

"It has not been happening, but under competition it's a little different story", he said. I've been away from it for a very long time. "It's one thing to hit shots in practice - you are going to hit them further with the adrenaline going, and I am still learning how much further". It was a tough go for a while and now I don't have any of those feelings.
