SpaceX's Falcon Heavy rocket roars to life during test fire

SpaceX on Wednesday carried out the first static fire test of its Falcon Heavy rocket at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida in preparation for its initial launch that CEO Elon Musk said could occur in a "week or so", Spaceflight Now reported Wednesday.

The Falcon Heavy is one of the most anticipated launches in recent history and the Kennedy Space Center near Titusville wants you to experience the "thrilling sights, sounds and sensations of this historic launch".

Shortly after the extended test firing, Elon Musk took to Twitter to announce that it had been successful, as well as a launch date within "a week or so". It's basically three Falcon 9 rockets - the current SpaceX standard-bearer - strapped together.

The Falcon Heavy is based on the Falcon 9 but triples the number of first-stage engines, providing more lift.

"Aiming for first flight of Falcon Heavy on February 6 from Apollo launchpad 39A at Cape Kennedy", Musk said in a tweet Saturday. However, the Falcon Heavy appeared to pass its static test fire earlier this week with flying colors.

His address also strongly chastised the world's corporations and governments for becoming disconnected from the common person. The deal comes amid worries that Trump will pull the USA out of the North American Free Trade deal.

The Falcon Heavy is tailor-made for launching large satellites to geosynchronous orbits, or for sending payloads to the moon or Mars.

Only the Saturn V moon rocket, last flown in 1973, delivered more payload to orbit.

Although the February 6 date should be treated as an aspiration, Falcon Heavy is closer than ever before to its first launch, an event that will be quickly followed by the near-simultaneous landings of three first stage boosters - two by land, one by sea.

As with all SES missions with SpaceX since SES-10 in March 2017, the launch of SES-16 will use a flight-proven Falcon 9 booster, specifically B1032 which previously launched the NROL-76 classified mission for the National Reconnaissance Office in May a year ago.

It was Musk's first tweet in more than a week. Musk has repeatedly warned the rocket could explode.
