Why has Afghanistan seen so many attacks in the last week?

Only two days after a massive blast that killed over 100 in Kabul, a series of explosions and gunfire hit the Afghan capital in a pre-dawn attack Monday.

'He passed through the first checkpoint saying he was taking a patient to Jamuriate hospital and at the second checkpoint he was recognised and blew his explosive-laden vehicle, ' said interior ministry deputy spokesman Nasrat Rahimi.

At least five militants armed with rocket-propelled grenades and automatic rifles were involved, according to Reuters.

The bombing follows a more than 12-hour siege on the Intercontinental Hotel in Kabul that killed at least 22 people on January 20. Both the Islamic State (Isis) and the Afghan Taliban have launched attacks against security forces recently.

Afghan Defense Ministry spokesman Dawlat Waziri said a suicide bomber struck the military unit guarding the academy, setting off a gunbattle.

Two of the attackers blew themselves up, two were killed in fighting and one was captured.

The army soldiers also found one RPG launcher, four AK-47 guns and a suicide vest, the statement said.

Ambulance bomb kills 40, wounds 140 in Kabul attack
Last weekend, six Taliban militants attacked Kabul's Intercontinental Hotel, leaving 22 people, including 14 foreigners, dead. Waheed Majroh, a spokesman for the Ministry of Health, said that 140 wounded had been brought to Kabul hospitals so far.

The government has blamed the Taliban-affiliated Haqqani Network, which Afghan and Western officials suspect of involvement in at least some of the recent attacks in the capital.

"Everyone knows that the Taliban are operating from Pakistani territory", said Ruttig, "so the public denials are not really convincing".

Trump also said he would put increasing pressure on Pakistan, which lies on the eastern border with Afghanistan, by withholding more than $200 million in military aid, citing that country's inability to confront regional terrorist networks on its soil.

Afghanistan's chief executive, Abdullah Abdullah, condemned the attack as "insane, inhuman, heinous and a war crime", while calling on the global community to take further action against state sponsored terrorism.

A security alert issued on Sunday warned that the Islamic State group - which claimed a deadly attack on Save the Children's office in Afghanistan's east on Wednesday - was planning to attack supermarkets and shops in Kabul frequented by foreigners. He said commando forces had arrived at the scene. He said four others have been arrested in the ambulance bombing case.

The recent attacks have served only to bolster the USA commitment, he said. No exact figures were immediately available for either the USA fatalities or injuries.

According to TOLONews channel the clashes between security forces and insurgents lasted for about five hours after a group of five attackers tried to enter the facility.
