German mobile app market reaches Euro 1.5 bln in revenue in 2017

The Google Assistant is now available as a standalone app on the Play Store for the Android Go edition devices.

Any number of malicious apps sneaking through the cracks is nothing to be sniffed at, but at least Google is catching many more bad actors than it has in previous years.

The news isn't all bad: Google said 99 per cent of the bad apps were binned by tools that employ machine learning, so nobody ever had the chance to download them.

It is the first time in the history of Google Play that so many numbers of apps are pulled down by Google in one year.

Google announced a year ago in July that the company is using artificial intelligence to help identify malicious apps entering the Play Store. Particularly, its claim that 99 percent of malicious and fraudulent apps were zapped before anyone could install them is impressive, though for affected users, even 1 percent is too high. To combat this, Google wants to teach users how to make better security decisions, though it's also using Google's Safe Browsing tools to detect if an app connects to a known bad site. "With the launch of Google Play Protect in 2017, we've reduced the rate of PHA installs by an order of magnitude compared to 2016".

Games, finance, and personalisation apps led on category share growth on Google Play.

This could signal a welcome, albeit much delayed, change in the way the Google Play Store is monitored. Google took down more than 250,000 of these apps in the a year ago.

That seems like a lot of bad apps and bad developers.

As far as the inappropriate content including pornography, extreme violence, hate and illegal activities are concerned, Google's improved machine learning models sifted through massive amounts of incoming app submissions and flagged them for potential violations. It wasn't unusual to get tipped off to a malicious, or at least unsafe, app and see that thousands of people had already downloaded it. These are malware scanning, application monitoring for rogue behavior, the ability to remotely locate, lock, and optionally wipe your device, and warnings about dodgy sites, which try to feed you malware or trick you out of personal information. If there's a fix that requires a newer OS, you're stuck.

Either way, it's nice to get a little check in on how big companies are handling the hard task of policing their app stores, especially since it's a problem that's only going to get worse.
