Trump may try to prosecute special counsel Mueller

Meanwhile, Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer raised the possibility of tying such legislation to the negotiations over government spending. A bill authored by Sens. "So Mueller didn't raise his hand and say, hey, pick me".

He was referring to a proposal he unveiled in August with Sen.

FBI Director Robert Mueller is sworn in to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee during a hearing on "Oversight of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)", on Capitol Hill in Washington September 17, 2008.

CNN's Jim Acosta is reporting tonight that, per a source, President Trump hasn't completely ruled out firing Robert Mueller.

It's not clear that lawmakers would have the authority to stop the president with legislation if he made a decision to fire an executive branch appointee like Mueller, who's overseeing the US probe into Russia's alleged interference in the 2016 USA election, Gates told NBC's "Meet the Press".

"There are some constitutional issues with those bills, but it certainly wouldn't hurt to put that extra safeguard in place given the latest stories", she said. Late previous year, Collins was cooler toward the idea of moving to shield Mueller.

Acosta said on The Situation Room Trump is growing "increasingly impatient" with the special counsel's investigation and could still fire him. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) and Chris Coons (D-Del.) would only allow the firing of a special counsel in the event of "misconduct, dereliction of duty, incapacity, or conflict of interest".

But some Republican leaders have called such legislation unnecessary.

Two prominent Republican lawmakers in the House of Representatives - Kevin McCarthy of California and Trey Gowdy of SC - both said they approve of Mueller's performance in the ongoing criminal investigation. "I take lying to the American people very, very seriously", Starr said, adding, "So absolutely, I think that is something Bob Mueller should look at".

McCarthy said Trump and his staff have "fully cooperated" with the investigation.

When the flight attendant asked Selter if she wanted to be removed from the plane, she sarcastically told him that she did. Selter was asked to leave the aircraft after a disagreement occurred Saturday night at Miami International Airport (MIA)".

"I think what happened here is the president had a bad idea", Collins said.

McCarthy expressed confidence in Mueller but questioned the motivations of some others in the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Justice Department who have been involved in the probe, citing the revelations of politically charged texts disparaging Trump. And the White House counsel is still on the job, and Mr. Mueller is still aggressively investigating.

Gates, 74, who served both Republican and Democratic presidents, praised Mueller's "extraordinary integrity and character".

Not all Democrats are embracing that tactic.

Trump has said the reports that he wanted to fire Mueller are "fake news". "As of right now I'm unaware of any effort, official effort, on the part of the White House to undermine the special counsel".

"He feels like there's been millions of dollars of taxpayers' dollars spent and no evidence yet of collusion", Short said.

And on Monday evening, the Republican majority on the House intelligence committee, led by committee Chairman Devin Nunes of California, voted to publicly release a memorandum with accusations of misconduct against senior FBI officials overseeing the Russian Federation investigation.

It is ultimately up to Congress to release the memo.

"Trump has reportedly been more and more frustrated by the DOJ's inability to do his bidding in recent months, and on one occasion last week asked why he couldn't get "[his guys]" and the "Trump Justice Department" to do what he tells them to do.

But, Gates said, "People need to be prepared that a guy like Bob Mueller may come to a different conclusion that will elate some people and anger some people".
