How to keep local stories at the top of your Facebook newsfeed

Facebook said it ended the quarter with 2.13 billion monthly active users, up 14% from the year-ago period.

Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg announced earlier this month that Facebook will rank user posts higher than posts shared by businesses, and today he said that the social network will also prioritize local news sources over national and global outlets.

Wall Street was expecting Facebook to report revenue of $12.5 billion and profit of $1.94 per share.

Perhaps the most striking figure for investors was the decline in daily active users in the U.S, the company's most valuable market. "We're doing this by encouraging meaningful connections between people rather than passive consumption of content". For example, if most people who click on a publisher's link come from San Francisco, Facebook's algorithm will mark post as local news.

Zuckerberg previously said the change could lead to a drop in user engagement and time spent on the platform, but would ultimately improve the quality of the user experience.

Mr Zuckerberg said: "Last quarter, we made changes to show fewer viral videos to make sure people's time is well spent". They use Facebook for its reach and its targeting, with or without the publisher content. Neil Campling, co-head of the global thematic group at Mirabaud Securities Ltd., wrote in a note following the results.

Trump may try to prosecute special counsel Mueller
CNN's Jim Acosta is reporting tonight that, per a source, President Trump hasn't completely ruled out firing Robert Mueller . Gates, 74, who served both Republican and Democratic presidents, praised Mueller's "extraordinary integrity and character".

Despite beating analyst expectations, Facebook's stock still slid by 5 percent in after-hours trading following its earnings report.

As a result, Facebook said its earnings per share was lower by 77 cents. Without the adjustment, Facebook would have earned $2.21, topping consensus of $1.94. Facebook has told federal election officials it is open to greater oversight of its political ads, but has not explicitly backed the proposed legislation.

A growing number of Americans are consuming news stories from social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter.

The company's executives said this month that Facebook users will see more posts from family and friends and fewer from businesses and publishers. That's despite the fact that Facebook once again had a blockbuster year in 2017: The company revealed Wednesday that it generated $40.65 billion in revenue in 2017, compared to $26.89 billion in 2016.

On January 11, Facebook announced that its switch to meaningful social interactions with friends and families will take a hit on the amount of news in News Feed.

Then there's are the billion-plus Messenger MAUs who have yet to be monetized, and a billion more WhatsApp users who are in the early stages of generating revenue.
