Raila Odinga to be "sworn-in" as alternative Kenyan President

Raila Odinga to be

Going through with the shadow inauguration could exacerbate Kenya's current political crisis, with little real hope of seeing Kenyatta's being replaced. We advise our supporters to come prepared to stay until our mission is accomplished. Police have vowed to block opposition supporters from attending the event.

The legislator, who administered the controversial oath during the event held at Uhuru Park Grounds, was arrested at Milimani Law Courts on Wednesday afternoon. "We will not allow that", said Nairobi Police chief Japheth Koome. They flooded into a central park even after the government threatened to disperse any demonstrations.

As thousands of people gathered in Uhuru Park, near Nairobi's main business district, authorities began to force independent television and radio stations reporting on the gathering off air, several outlets said - the first such closures for about a decade.

"We have achieved everything we have achieved through defiance, through resistance and sustenance of a struggle to ensure we liberate ourselves from the yolk of the police state and dictatorship", Magaya said. Dozens of Kenyans have died in anti-government protests in recent months.

On Monday, Linus Kaikai, chairman of the Kenya Editors' Guild, said editors had been warned by authorities that they could be shut down if they covered the event.

The party said it will swear in Raila Odinga based on the annulled results of the August 8 presidential election which they claim was rigged to favour President Uhuru Kenyatta. The court cited irregularities and illegalities and said it ruled against Kenyatta because the electoral commission refused to open its computer system for court scrutiny.

She noted that there is still an ongoing investigation regarding one other individual connected with the shooting. Haig told Newsweek that he had "no link" to Paddock, and that he didn't understand why he was being questioned.

American officials met with Odinga and members of his party to warn them against proceeding with his plans for an inauguration, but they proceeded anyway, stating that Odinga was the true victor of the August election and the October re-vote was entirely invalid. The commission said the information was fake, and said the opposition was misleading the public "on the results pathway, the servers, information on the public portal and the forms used to declare results".

The re-run earned Mr Kenyatta 98% of the ballots cast, but Mr Odinga boycotted that election over claims it was a scam.

The Kenyan opposition released results from the August vote it claimed were "authentic" that showed Odinga the victor but did not explain how it was able to obtain the data.

In a statement copied to Ghanaweb, the International Relations and Security Expert says he finds the development in Kenya very worrying as many people could die when violence breaks out in the course of the "illegal" inauguration.

The opposition puts the death toll at more than 300.
