New features coming to PS4's operating system in big 5.50 update

As a feature primarily designed for parents of children, the new Play Time Management feature coming with the PS4 5.50 update will allow tracking of how much the PS4 is used.

Play Time Management: This feature helps parents manage PS4 playtime for their children.

Family managers/guardians have the option to add extra game time through their smartphone or PC. Family managers will be able to track playtime, as well as set restrictions either based on certain time windows or on total amount of time spent playing. Notifications on PS4 will be sent to the child during gameplay so that he or she knows when they should save and quit. Additionally, they have the option of automatically logging the child out of the PS4 once playtime ends.

Your username tab will show everything you've ever purchased for PS4 in one subdivision, and every game you've claimed via the PlayStation Plus Instant Game Collection in another. "This PS4" will show only the applications that are now installed on your system - as in, the ones that you'll actually be interested in seeing 90 percent of the time - with further subdivisions for games and apps. In addition to the new tabs, the "Hide apps" function will be added to the library that will hide certain applications (betas, trials, and demos) under the "Purchased" tab. This section also shows games that have been purchased, but not downloaded.

The final coup-de-grace for messy libraries: you can finally hide apps. You can also see who's now online. New handy shortcuts will let you control the volume and play/pause. On the Media Player or the USB Music Player, Triangle works as the shortcut for play or pause. If PS Plus membership is expired, a PS Plus icon with a lock will appear next to the games until users have re-subscribed. Oh well. There will always be another PS4 update!

For PS4 Pro gamers, the firm is adding a new "supersampling" mode, which boosts the visuals for gamers still operating on 1080p TVs.

Finally, Sony details the supersampling mode coming for PlayStation 4 Pro owners.

"Please note performance will vary, as games are optimised differently to take advantage of the power of the PS4 Pro". All in all, it's a pretty huge update.

Are you a Sony system owner? It features some (limited) options for modifying the image you have, such as zooming and cropping.
