Barack and Michelle Obama's National Portrait Gallery Portraits Are So Stunning

Former President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama's official portraits were unveiled Monday at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C.

The Obamas' portraits follow an established Washington tradition: the National Portrait Gallery has commissioned portraits of outgoing U.S. presidents and first ladies since 1962. To commission a painting of Mrs. Obama by artist Kehinde Wiley, who has painted pictures of black women holding the severed heads of white women is outrageous and reveals the double standard of decency acceptable to liberals and the mainstream media.

Reflecting to the audience, Michelle Obama admitted to feeling "a little overwhelmed" by occasion. The former first lady spoke of her late father, who she says "sacrificed everything to give me and my brother the opportunities he never dreamed for himself".

"And I know the kind of impact that will have on their lives", she continued, "because I was one of those girls".

Both Wiley and Sherald are portraitists who specialize in painting African Americans and in rendering aspects of black culture.

The former president said Mr Wiley was "working at a disadvantage because his subject was less becoming". "I have enough political problems", said Mr. Obama to laughter from the audience.

Wiley is known for depicting modern-day African-American subjects using the tropes of classical European art.

Michelle Obama's portrait done by Sherald, is a grayscale painting of the former First Lady perched behind a blue background, wearing a white floor-length gown with splashes of color. We should also condemn the Obamas' commissioning of such an individual to paint their official portraits.

"Wow!" said Mrs Obama of her painting by Amy Sherald, another black artist, whose work addresses social justice.
